Choosing my carriers

Introduction

Choosing the carriers that will ship your products is a difficult decision. In this article, Bigblue gives you recommendations to help you through this important step.

To select the carrier that answers best your needs, you first have to know:

  • Is it BtoB or BtoC orders?
  • Are you shipping heavy or small products?
  • How much are you willing to pay?
  • How fast do you want to ship orders?

If you want a summary of our advices to set-up your app, check at the end of the article !

☝️Please note that carrier codes can be found in the  Warehouse settings of the app (LogisticsWarehouse), under Shipping Zones, at the bottom of the page

BtoB Business

You have a BtoB order and you want to know which carrier you should choose? You are at the right place!

Check our recommendations for the different shipping areas below

  • You are shipping small BtoB orders (<50kg)

UPS is the most qualitative one and can take an unlimited number of parcels.
DPD is the most cost-efficient multi-parcel shipping solution. DPD can take up to 3 parcels (only available at EU-FRA-002 & EU-FRA-003 warehouses)

  • You are shipping pallets to other areas

Use Geodis that can take up to 3 pallets. Moreover, Geodis is used to deliver shops, warehouses such as Galeries Lafayette, Monoprix ... They are used to appointments and can take it by themselves when needed.

  • You are shipping 4 pallets or more

Use you own carrier by selecting "custom carrier" in the app and ask the support to get the process. A flat fee of 6€ will be charged for loading of pallets.

BtoC Business

Shipping to Metropolitan France

  • You are looking for the best price-quality ratio

Use Colis Privé Tracked or Colissimo Access

Colis Privé offers the best price and the average claim answer time is shorter. Colis Privé is particularly suited for mailbox deliveries as drivers have the keys to open them. Colis Privé covers 85% of the French postal codes, so you'll always need to choose Colissimo as a second choice for the most rural areas

Colissimo is the most trusted and known home-delivery solution in France. Shipping rates are slightly more expensive but it offers a slightly lower loss-rate and the delivery is carbon-free in France (after carbon compensation).

If you want to avoid any theft and make sure the final customer will be delivered their product in person, you can use Colis Privé with Signature or Colissimo Expert (with signature). It can be usefull, especially if you take out an insurance Ad Valorem

  • You are looking for the quickest transit and a premium delivery service

Use Chronopost 18 which can deliver on the next day if the order has been transmitted to us before the cut-off. Chronopost is a premium carrier that gives delivery options to the final client. They can:

  • Re-schedule delivery
  • Choose a delivery slot

  • You are looking for a pick-up point solution Pick up points solutions can be a good solution for clients that are not often at home and rather pick up their package at a nearby place. Pickup points also give the opportunity to the client to pick up their parcel at night, and even during the weekend. It is most of the time the less expensive solution

Use Mondial relay ( 9000 pick-up points

  • You are looking for an environmentally friendly solution Prefer Relay Point solutions that avoid the last mile delivery carbon footprint, responsible for 15% of carbon emissions (ADEME). Prefer Standard solutions rather than Express solution that are using partially loaded truck (and therefore have a higher carbon footprint) to gain speed.

Using Mondial relay is the best, followed by Colissimo and Colis Privé

Advices:

  • Shipping and return policy must be simple, quick to read and transparent.
  • You should offer several different shipping options in order to avoid losing customers than would not be satisfied by standard ones.
  • You should offer to your clients at least a "free" shipping solution and an express shipping solution with extra fees. It is better to offer a pick-up point solution as well.
According to Pitneybowes, 91% of customers leave when shipping isn’t free or fast enough and 79% prefer the shipping to be free rather than fast.
  • You should offer your clients an environmentally friendly solution.
Offering a sustainable solution can be good for the brand image but also to make customers more aware of their environmental impact.
The online purchasing habits of 53% of online shoppers are impacted by the consideration of environmental elements. (Fevad) Did you know? Colissimo and Chronopost compensate for their carbon emissions.
